Pharmacy School

Anyone looking to earn a degree in something that is fun, honest, rewarding, and a career that pays well should consider the different types of pharmacy degrees.  With an earned degree, the doors of opportunity open wide, not only for the type of position, but also the type of medical facility.  For instance, some people will work in hospitals, some in clinics, in doctor’s offices, on cruise ships, and more.  If you are tired of feeling like you are stuck in a no end position, then perhaps pharmacy degrees is something you should consider.

In most cases, pharmacy degrees can be earned at brick and mortar institutions, as well as online universities.  Today, there are many great online schools that offer full accreditation.  With this option, you can consider a number of different pharmacy degrees while also saving money and enjoying flexibility.  The primary benefit of earning a degree online is that the time you attend class is worked around your time.  Therefore, if you work a full-time job, you can do your homework, research, and testing in the evening or on the weekends.

Of course, there would be lab time that would require you to attend done at a traditional college or university but this is only occasional.  The two types of pharmacy degrees we want to cover in this article are for a pharmacy technician and professional Doctor of Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technician

Depending on the facility and the pharmacy, this position would require pharmacy degrees to include either a bachelor or master’s degree.  With these pharmacy degrees, you would have numerous responsibilities that make the job fun and exciting.  Working as an assistant pharmacist, there would be two primary areas of duties.

First, a pharmacy technician needs to have good, current knowledge of medication and drugs.  This would require having training in knowing the difference in pain medications, how they work, and when they would be administered.  The second area of duty would be having a good understanding of pharmacy operations.  That way, whenever the pharmacist is ill or gone on vacation, the pharmacy would continue to operate as normal.

Skills taught with pharmacy degrees for becoming a pharmacy technician would include exceptional organization.  After all, working with medications of different types, different dosages, and different applications, coupled with people’s names, health history, allergies, and so on can be tedious.  Getting information messed up would not only be confusing and frustrating, but also possibly dangerous.

In most cases, pharmacy degrees for technicians will include training on how to work with and for licensed pharmacist, answering questions specific to generic brands versus name brands, handling inventory, and in some instances, actually filling orders.  Of course, by law, there are several functions that the pharmacy technician that cannot provide but all in all, this person is the right-hand to the pharmacist.

Doctor of Pharmacy or Pharmacist

Pharmacy degrees that would let you practice pharmacy medicine are also available at brick and mortar facilities, as well as online.  While there might be slightly different requirements from one state to another, most would provide 54 hours of credit to be completed within a three-year period.  Additionally, some pharmacy degrees require an annual refresher course since both medication and laws change.

With the completed degree, you could move on to a full-time job providing a needed service to your community.  In fact, pharmacy jobs are in abundance, meaning your ability of finding a position would be relatively easy.  With this degree, you would have in-depth knowledge of drugs and medication, drug interactions, recalls, and more.  Filling the prescriptions would be your primary function although this position puts you in charge of the pharmacy and other employees.

As mentioned, we highly recommend you consider online education when it comes to pharmacy degrees.  Most online schools will work with a local college or university to bridge the gap for labs required on campus with any required clinical rotations.  Even the material for online pharmacy degrees comes in a variety of media.  For this, you might have books, CDs, or DVDs.  There are even online universities that have class time via software and the internet.  This way, you can see other at-home students, giving you a chance to mingle and learn as if in a real classroom.

Regardless of the types of pharmacy degrees you are most interested in or the school facility, you will need to start the application process to get started.  If you have transcripts from other colleges or universities, you would provide copies along with the application.  Once accepted, you are on your way to choosing from different pharmacy degrees, finding a great working niche.
