Education and License Requirements

When getting ready to go to school for the field of pharmacy, you will have to go through an admission process known as PCAT or Pharmacy College Admission Test.  This test is designed to make sure applicants have the right level of science aptitude to be successful in the pharmacy industry.  As a result, people who go on to earn an Associate, Bachelor, Master, or Pharm.D degree are the most qualified so pharmacology is able to uphold exceptionally high standards.

To enjoy pharmacist wages, there are also licensing requirements.  Therefore, degrees accredited by ACPE or the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education is required for anyone interested in becoming a pharmacist.  Another requirement is passing the NAPLEX, which stands for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination.  Finally, an MPJE or Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination has to be passed.

As far as pharmacist wages once the education is complete and the proper license secured ranges between $75,000 and $95,000 a year.  However, the actual amount would depend on a number of dynamics to include geographical area, the actual company or pharmacy where you would work, the college education, years of experience, and so on.

One of the most exciting aspects of pharmacist wages is that this particular industry is growing significantly.  Jobs for aids, technicians, pharmacists, and even doctors of pharmacy are on the rise due to an overwhelming demand.  Therefore, if you go to school so you can make the most pharmacist wages possible, chances are good you will succeed in achieving your goal.

Depending on the person and level of education, some people will start out as an aid or technician, gradually working their way to a position of pharmacist.  Often, the person would finish school for the technician job and then while working, continue going to school to become a licensed pharmacist, which could be done through a number of online universities.  This means while working as a technician, the income level would be quite different from that of pharmacist wages.  Typically, technicians will earn on average $11.50 per hour.

As mentioned, pharmacist wages can vary dramatically based on factors such as location, description of the job, education, training, and actual experience.  Obviously, a pharmacist just coming out of college is going to make less than a pharmacist taking a position with another company who has years of actual experience.  However, to draw more people in to meet the growing need, pharmacies are willing to pay excellent pharmacist wages.

In all states, it appears that chain pharmacies, merchandisers, hospitals, and supermarkets pay the best pharmacy wages while independent pharmacies and HMOs pay less.  In addition, pay on the West Coast and in the Midwest for pharmacy wages are higher than wages paid on the East Coast and in the South.  Therefore, taking this information into consideration, you might consider jobs in specific parts of the country.

One of the things you might want to think about when choosing the college or university where you will earn your pharmacist degree is looking for those that have job placement services.  Many times, colleges and universities that offer this to students are able to secure some of the better positions, which can also equate to higher pharmacy wages.  The educational institute would have a direct link to some of the larger pharmacies, those that pay well.  Therefore, after you graduate, you would be provided with much-needed support to be placed in a well-paying job.

Finally, remember that there are so many different opportunities for making pharmacist wages.  In other words, if you go where the demand is the highest, you will make more money.  Remember, there are pharmacies on cruise ships, in grocery stores, online, and so on.  Take time to do your research, finding a reputable company that offers stability and a healthy working environment but also one that is not afraid to offer high pharmacist wages.
